  • The act of removing one or more components of a word or phrase by clipping, acronymy, initializing, or blending. The designation formed by omitting words or letters from a longer designation. For examples, laboratory as lab and Wolrd Wide Web as www.
  • abbreviations were often used to save space and effort when writing. They generally fall into three categories: 'suspensions', in which the end of the word is abbreviated, signaled by the use of a horizontal bar or another graphic symbol; 'contractions', in which another part of a word is abbreviated with the use of a graphic symbol; 'abbreviation symbols', used for whole words and often derived from the tachygraphic (shorthand) systems of Antiquity.
  • The shortened form of a written word or phrase (cf. Acronym and Nickname). Inc. magazine is an excellent example of an abbreviation which outdoes its full form by conveying an insider image.
  • Description
  • the shortened version of a word
  • a shortened form of a word or phrase
  • shortening something by omitting parts of it
  • An abbreviation (from Latin brevis "short") is a shortened form of a word or phrase. Usually, but not always, it consists of a letter or group of letters taken from the word or phrase. For example, the word "abbreviation" can itself be represented by the abbreviation "abbr." or "abbrev."
